Cheesecloth Spirits

11

Create hauntingly beautiful, semi-translucent spirits that look like real, floating apparitions. By using cheesecloth and fabric stiffener, you can mold three-dimensional figures that hold their shape, looking incredibly delicate, eerie, and artistic when hung in dark corners or doorways.

Drape wet cheesecloth over a form, such as a mannequin head, a balloon, or a doll, to create the head and shoulder structure. Saturate the cheesecloth generously with fabric stiffener, liquid starch, or a mixture of white glue and water. Let it dry completely until it becomes stiff and rigid. Once dry, carefully remove the form from underneath. You will be left with a hollow, ghostly shell that retains its shape. Hang these floating figures from the ceiling with fishing line, allowing them to catch the light and sway gently with the room’s airflow.
