20. The Woodland Bird Sanctuary
Turn the protected understory of your shade tree into a thriving wildlife haven with a Woodland Bird Sanctuary. Trees naturally offer shelter, nesting spots, and protection from predators for songbirds; by curating the ground space underneath with bird-friendly elements, you invite a colorful, dynamic display of native birds directly into your viewing angle.
Position a heavy, elevated stone or cast-iron birdbath in the center of the under-tree bed, keeping it filled with clean, fresh water. Surround the base with berry-producing, shade-tolerant shrubs and groundcovers like Winterberry, Partridgeberry, Coralberry, and Native Pachysandra, which provide vital natural food sources. Hang wooden bird feeders, suet cages, and roosting pockets directly from the lower tree limbs. Add a comfortable timber bench nearby where you can sit quietly in the shade, hidden under the canopy, while watching cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, and wrens flutter down to bathe, feed, and sing in their private woodland refuge.
