7. Haunting Mirror Portal

Mirrors in a garden always add depth and mystery, but during Halloween, they can be used to create a chilling, portal-like illusion. Find a large, ornate vintage mirror with a distressed gold or dark wood frame and mount it securely against an ivy-covered wall, a wooden fence, or nestled deep within a thick shrubbery border. Cover the edges of the mirror with trailing vines, moss, and faux cobwebs to make it look as though it has been reclaimed by nature.
To create the “portal” effect, use frosted glass spray or specialized window film to apply a faint, ghostly silhouette of a figure onto the glass, making it look as though a spirit is trapped inside or trying to step out into the garden. When the garden’s accent lighting hits the mirror at an angle, it will reflect the surrounding foliage and the flickering candles, creating a disorienting, beautiful, and slightly unsettling visual trick that makes your garden feel infinitely larger and filled with secrets.
